Hello all! It’s been a while, but this semester has been busy and I’ve had very limited time to do things for myself, much less write. The next blog I planned on writing was just discussing my Fall 2017 semester at school but I’ve been inspired to write because of some recent events from my home town.
In the past couple of weeks, a couple of students have committed suicide in the DC area, which absolutely breaks my heart. One of these students attended my high school, a place where I feel like my life was changed for the better, and I’m so sorry that she couldn’t find that same community. As a person that has suffered depression, self harmed, and has contemplated suicide, I understand the pain and struggle that these young people have felt. However, I was lucky enough to catch myself before it got too bad and was able to reach out for help through my family and a small amount of close friends.
I encourage everyone to tell people that they feel close to that you love them or that you care about them. They may or may not open up to you, but even knowing that you are there helps. It’s so easy to focus on your life and what you are going through, that we often miss out on major tell signs in those around us. I don’t know any of these teenagers, but I’m sure if they felt more love or even respect from others, they might still be alive.
We are all in this life together. We need to love and protect each other to the best of our ability. No one can get through life alone and they shouldn’t have to. We shouldn’t let them. Adults, go easy on kids because they have a lot to figure out in a digital age that constantly makes numerous kids feel left out and insecure. Teens, take care of your peers. Sit with them because even though it might be silent, the company is comforting. Hug your loved ones a little tighter and smile at those you don’t know as well. Work to make the world a more inviting place by treating everyone with kindness and respect. We don’t all have to be best friends but there is no reason to be an asshole to anyone
If anyone feels like they need to talk ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. If you feel like you need further assistance, reach out to your family. If your family is not a reliable resource, go to this website: https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/. I am here for you and I love you.
